The Lafourche Parish School District McKinney-Vento Program recently hosted its annual districtwide Parental Day at Lockport Middle School. This year’s inspiring theme, “Aviate, Navigate & Educate with the McKinney-Vento Program,” reflected the program’s commitment to helping families overcome barriers, connect with valuable resources, and empower students to achieve academic success.

The event welcomed 140 students and their families for a day filled with educational opportunities, community partnerships, and essential support services.

The program was honored to welcome Dr. Antiqua Hunter, Louisiana Department of Education State McKinney-Vento Coordinator, who delivered an encouraging message to families about the importance of educational stability and the resources available through the McKinney-Vento Program. Pittre Walker addressed the participating vendors, expressing appreciation for their continued partnership and dedication to serving families throughout the parish. Melissa Walker of Catholic Charities shared valuable information about the organization’s programs and services that help families facing housing and other challenges.

A highlight of the event was the participation of 29 community vendors, who provided information and resources to help families access educational, health, counseling, employment, and community support services. Participating organizations included AmeriHealth, Ascent, Bayou Lafourche Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Bayou Land Families Helping Families, Bi-Parish Bayou National Association of University Women (NAUW), Caring Angels Transportation, Catholic Charities, Chiasson Eye Care, Cups and Capabilities, LLC, Community Action, Family Start Corporation, Fletcher Technical Community College, Lafourche Parish Library, Lafourche Parish School District Migrant, Pre-K, and Indian Education Departments, Lafourche Parish Brief Therapy, LPSD PAC Child Search, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Magnolia, Office of Public Health, Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital, South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority (SCLHSA), Shining for Cells, and Start Corporation.

The McKinney-Vento Program also extends heartfelt appreciation to its generous contributors whose support helped make the event a success: Acadia Family Dentistry, Big Mike’s Smokehouse, CanU Tri-Parish, Entergy, LOC, Lowe’s, Swamp Bayou Kitchen, Synergy Bank, Visions Outreach, & Williams and Technical College.

“This event would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our community partners, vendors, and contributors,” said the Quintina Brown, LPSD homeless liaison. “Together, we are helping families navigate barriers, access critical resources, and create brighter futures for our students.”

The annual Parental Day serves as the McKinney-Vento Program’s districtwide parental engagement event, bringing together families, schools, and community organizations to strengthen partnerships that support students experiencing homelessness. As a reminder all students have to re-qualify for McKinney-Vento services each school year. Families who are in need of services should complete required forms for the 2026-2027 school year.

The Louisiana Department of Education released 2025-2026 LEAP data today, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate our district’s continued academic growth and achievement.

The percentage of LPSD students in grades 3-12 performing at mastery level or above grew by two points, outperforming the state average by eight percentage points and placing our district in the Top 10 systems in the state for students achieving Mastery or Advanced. These are the first LEAP results that will be used to calculate School and District Performance Scores under Louisiana’s new Grow, Thrive, Achieve accountability model, which will be released this fall.

“Our latest performance scores are a direct reflection of the tireless work and dedication of our students, teachers, and staff who continue to push boundaries and raise academic standards in every classroom,” said Superintendent Jarod W. Martin. “While we celebrate this tremendous progress, we remain deeply committed to building on this momentum to close achievement gaps and ensure continued growth and success for every student in Lafourche Parish.”

To view the entire report, visit LDOE’s website at: https://doe.louisiana.gov/about/news-releases/release/2026/07/06/louisiana-students-achieve-record-high-performance-on-leap

Individual student LEAP scores are now available for review. Parents and guardians can securely access LPSD student LEAP scores through OnCourse Connect.

Congratulations to all of our students, teachers, support staff, families and community partners on your hard work and commitment to excellence. Together, we will keep moving Lafourche forward.

The new faculty parking lot at St. Charles Elementary has been poured. This milestone is part of a much larger campus improvement project that included a new 13,000+ square foot classroom addition, which opened after Thanksgiving Break last fall, as well other vital upgrades, including a secure single-point entry and a new chairlift to access the second floor. We are so excited to see all of these improvements come together to create a safer, more accessible, and modern learning environment for our students and staff!

A wide-angle, eye-level photograph of a large, newly poured rectangular concrete slab at an outdoor construction site, likely on a school campus. The concrete foundation dominates the center of the frame and is contained by wooden forms supported by small wooden stakes driven into the surrounding gravel and dirt ground. A small puddle of water reflects the sky on the slab's surface. In the background, a school playground with colorful blue, yellow, and red slides and equipment is visible behind a chain-link fence. To the left sits a small grey storage shed. To the right stands a brick school building with a covered
A horizontal, wide-angle photograph showing a large, newly poured flat concrete foundation under a bright, partly cloudy sky. The perspective is from beneath an open, covered structure, with several thick square white support posts and smaller thin metal poles framing the foreground. The expansive grey concrete pad stretches across the center of the image, showing light surface variations from drying. In the background, the edge of the construction site meets a grassy green field. An orange excavator, a small white mobile office trailer, a green dumpster box, and a small storage shed are visible along the perimeter of the field. Lush green trees line the far horizon under a vibrant blue sky filled with fluffy white cumulus clouds.

To the right, a tan brick school building stands with an attached white covered walkway. The entire scene is set under an overcast, bright white and cloudy sky.
While most high school students are enjoying a break from the books this summer, there is a ton of hands-on, work-based learning happening right now at the LPSD Career Magnet Center. In addition to Fast Forward Summers internships in carpentry and culinary arts, we have 14 Diesel students hard at work at CMC taking dual enrollment courses through Fletcher Technical Community College. We recently caught them in the shop sharpening their basic welding skills. Check them out in action!

An older male instructor, wearing glasses, a dark blue button-down short-sleeve shirt with a name badge, blue jeans, work boots, and a welding helmet pushed up on his head, stands on the right. He is writing a small diagram on a large black vertical metal divider panel with a piece of chalk. In the foreground and center, two students stand with their backs mostly to the camera, listening to the instructor. The student in the center wears a light blue button-down denim shirt, blue jeans, brown work boots, and a protective welding mask on his head. To his left, another student is partially visible, also wearing a welding mask. The workshop environment features concrete flooring, exposed brick and block walls, overhead fluorescent lighting, and welding equipment visible in the lower-left foreground.
A horizontal photograph of a student welding in a dark shop station. The student is positioned on the left side of the frame, seen from the back and side, hunched over a metal workbench. They are wearing a long-sleeve grey shirt, heavy protective welding gloves, and a safety helmet. A bright, intense white and golden light glows from the point of welding directly in front of the student, illuminating the concrete block wall behind the workbench. To the right of the glowing weld, a flexible overhead exhaust vent hose hangs down toward the station. Small metal hand tools rest on the dark surface of the workbench next to a vertical iron welding jig holding metal plates. The rest of the foreground and surrounding workshop booth are cast in dark shadows.
A horizontal, wide-angle photograph capturing a row of industrial welding stations in a high school or technical workshop. Two students are actively welding in separate, adjacent booths. On the left, a student in a dark long-sleeve shirt stands facing away from the camera, hunched over their workbench. To their right, a second student is seated or leaning over their workstation. Both students are obscured by extremely bright, brilliant bursts of white and blue welding light that create powerful lens flares extending across the booths. Smoke gathers near the ceiling above their stations. In the foreground, several rolling industrial carts hold welding machines, heavy gas cylinders (including one tan and one brown cylinder with mesh netting), and wrapped black and green hoses. Overhead, fluorescent lights illuminate each individual booth, and thick, black corrugated exhaust duct tubes run vertically up to the ceiling to vent fumes. A metal work table with scraps sits in the lower left corner.
A full-length, eye-level photograph of two male welding students posing side-by-side inside a workshop. They are both looking toward the camera and wearing safety equipment, including clear safety glasses, heavy yellow-brown leather welding gloves, work boots, and welding helmets pushed up on their heads. The student on the left is wearing a light blue denim button-down shirt, dark blue jeans, and dark brown boots. He stands with his legs slightly apart, holding a flat metal tool in his right hand and flashing a peace sign with his left hand. The student on the right wears a grey button-down shirt, faded light-wash jeans, and light brown boots. He stands with his arms crossed over his chest. To the far left is a tall, translucent red plastic welding safety screen. The background features the open concrete floor of the shop, with industrial welding machinery and overhead lighting visible.
